Community candlelight vigil

On Friday, March 6, the church of the Good Shepherd hosted the second Houlton community candlelight vigil for peace. The theme of the vigil was the concern for the victims of recent bombing of Iran and other countries in the mideast region. Community members of various faiths and other community members joined in song, reflection, and prayer. Brief poems written by children in war zones in Ukraine, Gaza, and other countries were shared. Ruba Haddad, a local resident who grew up in Jordan spoke about what her family there is currently experiencing. She recited some of the psalms and prayers in Arabic. At the conclusion of the service, everyone carried candlelight out into the darkness and prayed that children and families throughout the region would be protected from fear, harm, and death. Mary Miller led the group in singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as the candlelight glowed on faces and snowbanks.
